If you do not want to buy a garlic crusher, place the clove on a board, set the side of a knife on top of a peeled clove and press until you have mashed to a pulp. Or you can use a mortar & pestle & add a little salt to help form it into a smooth paste.
When a recipe calls for sautéed minced or slivered garlic in oil, try sautéing in wine or broth. It works just as well. Or spray a little olive oil spray into a nonstick skillet and sauté. Either way, all you want to do is release the garlic fragrance.
